Jim Callaway, chair of the Winstanley Walkers, is blunt about what life would look like without the club: "I think I'd be sitting at home watching daytime TV, which is pretty boring."

Walking football was built for exactly this. A slower, more accessible version of the game, designed for the over-60s, it gives former and new players a way back onto the pitch. "They think that once you get to a certain age, you can't play anymore", Callaway says — fifty, fifty-five, sixty, even seventy. The club's oldest member is 82. "And it never stops", he says. "You get the same buzz, you get the same enjoyment, you get the same crack, you get the same laugh. Nothing's changed at all. It's still when I played football when I was 19 years of age."
